An Artist's Paradise

by Mackenzie Brim

The most impactful experience on the island of Puerto Rico was the trip to visit the artist Samuel Lind's studio in Loiza. the bus trip down the coast of the island and through the thick, tropical topiary was long, rainy, and full of inspiration. The vibrant colors of the plants, the paint on the medians, and clothing of the people were all memorable on the drive.

Once arriving at the small, wooden home that was Lind's studio it was apparent that the colors of his home inspired him as well. Bronze sculptures, prints, and oil paintings covered the walls of the artist's home. His works represent the people of Puerto Rico and their culture: bright colors, vibrant life, and community.

Lind lives and breathes his art. Throughout his home there are works in progress setting amongst an incredible collection of his works. He is renowned across the world for his screen prints, but the mural of mother earth that adorns his kitchen is a true testament to his ability. The piece represents a connection to the earth and importance of nature.

For me, the trip was inspirational in a very intense way. To see someone who lives and breathes their craft was incredible to me as a part time

artist. The dedication and discipline that Lind, who also dabbles in music and dance, gives to his art is the reason that he is so successful.

Outside of his home was winding paths that lead to the beach. An orange wall on one side and another small cottage on the other lined it. The wall had small nectar flowers crowning the top and green foliage overhanging the path. It was a view fit for a work of art.
