Blog 2: “Interview: Encounters of the First Kind”
El Nuevo Dia’s Norma Borges said “viajes como estellos de vida” or traveling as a lifestyle. She introduced the class to our first interaction with travel writing, by discussing her history and perspective from her position of editor an contributor to the travel section of El Nuevo Dia. Dona Georges introduced us to the cultural importance of travel writing and the necessity to explore different genres of travel writing. She has worked at El Nuevo Dia for twenty-six years.
Norma discussed with the students the cultural importance of travel writing as a form of allowing the general audience to experience the smells, colors, and tastes of ones travels. El Nuevo Dia archives have an article of hers describing the nine reasons to travel. Unfortunately, the archives are not yet available to the unsubscribed public. She did discuss how the culture of Puerto Rico feeds off travel writers. She discusses how travel writing allows citizens to learn and explore various aspects of Puerto Rico, by providing a different perspective on a culturally familiar topic. She described how pictures and colorful interesting text and descriptions could take an ordinary story and turn it into an extraordinary story. Borges makes sure to introduce images that show the reader the culture and sights. The reader will then receive and experience a secondary account of the beauties of lands out of arms reach. Cultural experiences and expert advice has helped me gain a footing of the history, origins, and the Puerto Rican cultural interest in travel writing.
